In the immortal words of J.C. Watts: “The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good ….. We are born bad.”
In the not-so-immortal words of Alec Sharp: “Why do people do things? Because they can.”
If we think people are bad and will do bad things if they can, we create laws to constrain the bad behavior, and we enforce those laws. That’s how society functions. This would seem to be something that Republicans would be thrilled about.
Yet Republicans consider that government is the problem. Our Republican overlords want to get rid of agencies and laws that constrain bad behavior. They want make it easier for bad people to pollute our water and cause financial crises. They seem to have forgotten that people are fundamentally bad.
To slightly paraphrase the even-more-immortal words of Captain Renault in Casablanca: “I’m shocked, shocked to find that hypocrisy is going on here.“
